Each production has its own unique signature. It is my job, as DP, to identify a look and create a style that will convey feeling, mood and pace. Shooting in low light situations and exposing the cameras to extreme wet and dusty conditions, were everyday challenges. Adapting a style of shooting that the viewer can grasp in a never before seen underground world was overwhelming. Since a show like COAL had never been shot before, I had to develop a completely different style of shooting for my photographers. Lighting techniques, camera placements, custom camera rigs, and many other challenges arose from shooting a mile deep in the earth in a 48” hole.
