Cinematic Memoirs™
Cinematic Memoirs are a visual biography of an individual’s life. For years, people have written memoirs to preserve their legacy. Written memoirs are wonderful but rarely have the same impact as a story told in a visual medium. If one picture is “worth a thousand words”, imagine how your life story could be represented. I have been producing Emmy award winning content for over two decades. Simply put, I am a Storyteller. There may be no one more qualified to tell your story than StoryWorks. Byron works with you one on-one-to create an unforgettable cinematic documentation of your life that will be passed down for generations to come.
“Life goes on even after we perish. So make sure the legacy you leave behind is full of memories the world can cherish…”
Ask Yourself These Questions…
Two generations from now, what will your ancestors know about you? How do you wish to be remembered by your colleagues? What steps have you taken to ensure your accomplishments and family history will not be lost? What is your life and your legacy worth? NASA physicist and 1st generation space explorer George Gloeckler understood the importance of his legacy and commissioned us tell his story. The following is an example of an in depth, feature quality video.
“George Gloeckler, Seizing Opportunity”
Creating a Cinematic Memoir is Extremely Rewarding.
Allow me to guide you down memory lane. Unearthing long-forgotten stories, relationships, and shared experiences becomes a powerful celebration of your life. Memories once thought lost often resurface, evoking deeply emotional responses—it is not uncommon for participants to be moved to tears during the interview process.
Beyond preserving personal history, a Cinematic Memoir reconnects you with extended family and long-lost friends, strengthening bonds across generations. Hear what George Gloeckler had to say about the impact and results of his memoir.
How We Make a Memoir
I’m often asked how the process works. To help you understand the scope of the project and what’s involved, we’ve put together a brief outline that walks you through the Cinematic Memoir experience step by step. We hope it answers many of the questions you may already have. There’s a lot of information here—but don’t worry. We’ll guide you through every stage of the process and support you along the way.
Step 1: Pre-Interview & Discovery
We begin with an in-depth pre-interview conducted either by phone or in person. This session typically lasts approximately three hours and covers your life story in broad detail—your childhood, family roots, major life milestones, career, and any other experiences worth exploring.
The purpose of this step is twofold: to help us deeply understand the subject of the memoir and to establish a comfortable, informal relationship. At the same time, we listen carefully for meaningful moments, hidden stories, and emotional throughlines that will ultimately shape the narrative of your film.
Step 2: Story Outline & Question Development
Next, we organize the information gathered during the pre-interview into a structured outline. From that outline, we develop an initial list of interview questions and share it with you. You’ll have the opportunity to add, remove, or modify questions to ensure the story reflects what matters most to you.
Step 3: Defining the Vision
Together, we define the overall goals of the memoir. This includes identifying:
-
The intended audience
-
Whether an existing biography or written materials are available
-
The balance between personal life and career
-
The overall tone, direction, and scope of the production
-
Who may participate in supplemental or guest interviews
This step ensures creative alignment before production begins.
Step 4: Production Planning & Cost Estimate
Using all gathered information, we create a detailed production plan and cost estimate. Several factors influence the final scope and budget, including:
-
Number and location of shoot days
-
Duration of filming
-
Whether the memoir is intended for private or public viewing (licensing considerations)
-
The level of historical or archival research required
-
Existing photos, videos, and materials available
-
Desired timeline for completion
This planning phase ensures transparency and clarity before moving forward.
Step 5: Interviews & Filming
We then conduct a second, structured interview, which is fully transcribed. During this session, we walk through each pre-formulated question in depth. This process often uncovers additional memories and themes, which are incorporated into the master story outline. It also helps prepare you for the on-camera interviews to come.
Once the direction is finalized, we schedule filming.
For supplemental interviews, we either conduct advance research or a brief pre-interview to prepare participants. Questions are shared ahead of time, along with release forms.
Interviews typically take 1–2 hours each to film.
In total, the filming process usually involves 8–10 hours of production across multiple locations that visually support and enhance the story being told.
Step 6: Post-Production & Collaboration
After filming is complete, we move into post-production—the stage where the story truly comes to life. Editing is where structure, pacing, music, and emotion are carefully refined.
You are an active participant in this phase. As the memoir takes shape, we share rough cuts act by act, allowing you to review progress and provide feedback. Changes can be made at any stage—after all, this is your life story.
We then revise and refine the film based on your notes until you are fully satisfied and proud of the final result. Once approved, the completed memoir is delivered.
It’s a thoughtful, collaborative process—designed to honor your story every step of the way.
So, How Much Does It Cost?
I am often asked how much it would cost to make a Cinematic Memoir. Not to be evasive, but that answer lies completely with you. Cinematic Memoir costs are variable depending on your personal tastes but typically start around $3,500. Since each project varies so vastly, cost is simply based on time worked. Factors that affect the overall price are:
- Travel requirements and how many locations we will be shooting
- How many days of production (filming)
- How many days of post-production (editing)
- How much time is spent on research
- How much spent on licensing (if you wish to use copyright material)
- How in depth the web site is
- How much daily administration and coordinating is required
Average cost per-day breakdown:
- Production (filming) $1,300 per-day (two people, all cinema gear, lighting, audio and accessories included)
- Post-production (editing) $800 per-day
- Administration $350.00 per-day (coordinating travel & interviews, research, follow up calls)
Other Considerations
- Client Acquired Footage – Photos/Slides/Documents/Awards/Videos provided by client may be added to the memoir
- Licensed Acquired Footage – Licensed or royalty free supplemental footage from the web to enhance your story. Fees vary
- Interviews with Family, Friends and/or Colleagues – Additional voices to augment your story and provide different perspectives
- Specialty “Live” B-roll – Filming of Client with Steady Cam Rig and Slider, making your memoir more cinematic
- Graphics – Adding professional graphics to your memoir can take it to the next level
- Professional Narration – Add a trained voice-over artist to your narration, and it’s ready for the big leagues
- Sound Library – Select from over 3,000 songs to augment and create emotion throughout your memoir
- Multiple Edits – Additional charges for multiple edit requests
- Travel- All travel expenses incurred by filmmakers are to be fully compensated. This includes all travel to and from filming locations, baggage fees, accommodation, mileage etc.
GIFT A MEMOIR – This is truly the gift that keeps giving. For generations, family histories will live on. There is no better way to honor your family member than giving permanence to their life history. Why not have several family members contribute to create a memoir for a mother, father, or grandparent?
This is a lot of information, so if you would like me to explain it in greater detail, please give me a call. I would love to speak with you in person.
